چکیده
In this paper, we present three second-order finite element methods solving Maxwell’s equations when metamaterials are involved. The first method is based on integral-differential equations transformed from the governing equations; the other two methods solve the original governing differential equations. Numerical results are presented for the last two methods.

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Light Propagation in 2D Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Photonic Structures
Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

متن کاملOptimal non-dissipative discontinuous Galerkin methods for Maxwell's equations in Drude metamaterials
Abstract. Simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in metamaterials leads to more complicated time domain Maxwell’s equations than the standard Maxwell’s equations in free space. In this paper, we develop and analyze a non-dissipative discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for solving the Maxwell’s equations in Drude metamaterials. Previous discontinuous Galerkin methods in the literature for...
متن کاملTransient chaos in optical metamaterials.
We investigate the dynamics of light rays in two classes of optical metamaterial systems: (1) time-dependent system with a volcano-shaped, inhomogeneous and isotropic refractive-index distribution, subject to external electromagnetic perturbations and (2) time-independent system consisting of three overlapping or non-overlapping refractive-index distributions. Utilizing a mechanical-optical ana...
متن کاملHigher-order effects and ultrashort solitons in left-handed metamaterials.
Starting from Maxwell's equations, we use the reductive perturbation method to derive a second-order and a third-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, describing ultrashort solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. We find necessary conditions and derive exact bright and dark soliton solutions of these equations for the electric and magnetic field envelopes.
